Rich Results
Also known as Rich Snippets
Enhanced search results that display structured data as formatted blocks—ratings, prices, recipes, events—rather than plain text links.
Rich results are SERP listings that go beyond the standard blue link, title, and meta description. They render structured data (schema markup) as interactive, visually distinct elements: star ratings and review counts, product prices and availability, recipe ingredients and cook time, event dates and locations, FAQs, job listings, and more. Google, Bing, and other engines use schema.org vocabularies to parse and display this information.
For SEO, rich results matter because they occupy more vertical space, often appear above standard results, and tend to get higher click-through rates. A recipe rich result showing an image, rating, and prep time attracts far more attention than a plain link. However, earning rich results requires properly implemented structured data—schema markup must be valid, relevant to the page content, and satisfy Google's specific requirements, which vary by result type.
In practice, an SEO must identify which rich result types fit the site's content, add the correct schema markup (JSON-LD is preferred), test implementation with Google's Rich Results Test, and monitor Search Console for validation issues. Not all pages will qualify; Google applies heuristics and sometimes manual review. Competition for rich results is intense in categories like e-commerce, local services, and recipes, making proper implementation a concrete ranking and visibility lever.
