Zero-Click Search

A search result that answers a user's query directly without requiring a click to another page.

Zero-click search occurs when Google or another search engine displays enough information on the SERP itself to satisfy a user's intent, eliminating the need to visit a website. Common formats include featured snippets, knowledge panels, people also ask boxes, quick answer boxes, definitions, tables, local pack results, and carousel results. From 2016 onward, zero-click searches have grown substantially, and studies suggest they now account for roughly 60% or more of all searches.

For SEO practitioners, zero-click results present both risk and opportunity. The risk is obvious: if your content earns a featured snippet or appears in a knowledge panel, you might get visibility without traffic. The opportunity lies in recognizing that dominating zero-click real estate still builds brand authority and awareness. Many zero-click placements (knowledge panels, local packs, carousels) actually correlate with higher click-through rates once users want to learn more or take action. The strategic play is to target zero-click formats intentionally—not to drive direct clicks, but to establish topical authority and capture users earlier in their journey.
