On "LiveRamp Expands OpenAI Deal With First-Party Data Targeting"

The real tension here isn't about LiveRamp getting access to ChatGPT's ad platform—it's that we're watching first-party data become legible to LLMs as a targeting signal, which flips the entire pitch of "owned audiences" from a walled-garden play into something more like programmatic-lite. For practitioners, this matters because RampID's value proposition just shifted from "control your data independently" to "control your data *and* let OpenAI's demand-side system make better predictions with it," which is functionally closer to surrendering optionality than protecting it. If first-party data now feeds model training or inference at scale, the boundary between first-party and third-party starts collapsing anyway—and advertisers need to know what they're actually consenting to.
