SEO Daily Brief No. 3

On "301, 302, 307, 308: Which redirect?"

Google's redirect guidance is solid but practitioners still get this wrong because they conflate permanence with intent. A 301 means "this resource moved forever" and search consolidates signals; a 302 means "temporarily over there" and search treats it as a fork, hedging your bets. Most migrations should be 301s, but the real mistake isn't picking the wrong code—it's using redirects at all when you could restructure content properly upfront. If you're already in redirect hell, 301 is the safe default, but 307/308 matter only if you're preserving the request method, which almost nobody needs to worry about.
