Answer Engine Optimization
Also known as AEO
Optimizing content and websites to rank well in AI-powered answer engines like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity rather than traditional search engines.
Answer Engine Optimization reflects a shift in how people discover information online. Instead of typing a query into Google and scanning blue links, users increasingly ask questions directly to large language models and AI chatbots that generate synthesized answers. AEO involves structuring content, data, and site architecture in ways that make AI systems more likely to cite, reference, or surface your information when answering user queries.
For SEO practitioners, AEO matters because it represents a potential redistribution of traffic away from traditional search results. If an AI engine answers a question without linking to sources, or buries citations below the fold, traditional click-through traffic can evaporate even if your content is factually the most authoritative. AEO tactics include maintaining clear authorship and expertise signals, publishing in formats AI systems can easily parse (structured data, FAQs, how-to guides), building topical authority, and earning citations and links that boost credibility in training data and retrieval systems.
In practice, AEO doesn't replace SEO—it extends it. The same content that ranks well in Google often performs well with AI engines because both reward clarity, expertise, and topical depth. The key difference is intentionality: AEO requires thinking about how AI systems ingest, evaluate, and cite sources, not just how they rank pages.
