Local Citations

Online mentions of a business name, address, and phone number (NAP) on third-party websites, directories, or platforms.

A local citation is any reference to a business's name, address, and phone number published on a website other than the business's own domain. Common sources include Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Yelp, industry directories, local chamber of commerce listings, and review sites. Citations don't require a backlink—they're simply data mentions that signal a business exists at a specific location.

Search engines use citation signals to validate local business information and improve confidence in local search rankings. Consistent NAP data across citations helps engines match queries to the right business location. Inconsistencies—such as different phone numbers or address formats across directories—can confuse signals and hurt local visibility. High-quality citations from authoritative or relevant sources carry more weight than low-quality spam listings.

For local SEO practitioners, citation building involves auditing existing mentions, fixing errors, claiming unclaimed listings (especially on high-authority platforms like Google and Apple), and selectively submitting business information to relevant directories and industry databases.
