On "YouTube To Test Ask YouTube Inside The Shorts Player"

YouTube's pushing the AI assistant deeper into short-form video where watch time is already fragmented and attention is hostile to sustained interaction—this feels like answering a question nobody asked while the real problem is keeping people in Shorts long enough to monetize them properly. The watch-page Ask YouTube has been a quiet feature that mostly goes unused, so replicating that into an environment optimized for passive scrolling and rapid exits is unlikely to change much except add surface area for training data collection. If this actually ships at scale, it's a tacit admission that Shorts engagement metrics aren't where YouTube needs them, and they're grasping for engagement hooks rather than fixing the format itself.

From the source: YouTube is planning a limited, English-only test of Ask YouTube on select Shorts and says the watch-page feature will soon reach Shorts and live streams.
