On "Poisoned SERPs: An update on Google ranking data in Semrush"

Semrush tracking corrupted ranking signals is real, but framing it as a visibility problem they're solving lets Google off the hook. The data poisoning problem — AI spam, expired domains redirecting to junk, link schemes inflating metrics — is a Google ranking quality issue, not a data collection issue that a third-party tool can engineer around. What matters for practitioners is whether Semrush's adjustments actually improve the signal-to-noise ratio in their tracking, or if they're just filtering out noise while the underlying SERPs stay degraded. If it's the latter, you're getting a cleaner report on a dirtier reality, which is fine, but don't mistake platform transparency for platform quality improvement.
