Google's advice on 503s during maintenance is sound, but most sites still get this wrong—they either don't return the status at all or accidentally cache it, which tanks them worse than brief downtime ever would. The robots.txt clarifications matter more: sites have been over-restricting crawl budget or mis-configuring rules, and Google's reminder that proper configuration lets them crawl more efficiently is a direct productivity hack for anyone sitting on unindexed content. Bracket URLs and JPEG XL are footnotes, but the 503 + robots.txt combo addresses real self-inflicted wounds that show up constantly in audits. If you haven't tested your maintenance flow or audited your robots.txt in the last six months, do that before optimizing anything else.

From the source: Google reminds sites to use 503s during PHP patch downtime. Other updates cover robots.txt controls, bracket URLs, and JPEG XL in Google Images and Discover.
