Brand positioning mattering to AI ranking systems is real, but the framing oversells it—AI systems understand brand signals better now, sure, but they're still ranking pages for query intent first. What this actually means is that brands with muddled or inconsistent positioning across their web presence will get weaker entity recognition and topical authority signals, which hurts crawlability and relevance scoring, not that you need to "position yourself for AI" as a separate exercise from traditional SEO. If your brand voice, messaging, and topical clustering were already tight, this changes almost nothing. If they weren't, you have a SEO problem that predates generative AI.
