On "“Are You A Bot” Screens Can Get Your Pages Dropped By Google"

This is a real problem for anyone behind a paywall, registration wall, or bot-detection layer — Google treats the friction as a ranking penalty, not as legitimate site architecture. Mueller's saying the bots can't crawl past your verification screen, so Google drops your pages lower and potentially promotes a mirror or competitor as the canonical source instead. If you're protecting content behind authentication, you need either a sitemap with full URLs for Googlebot, rel=canonical pointing inward, or server-side detection that lets Google through without the CAPTCHA. The alternative is accepting that your pages will lose visibility in favor of sites with no barriers.
