GEO Theater vs a Site That Produces Work

Agencies are selling "AI Search" brochure pages again. New labels. Same pitch. GEO this, AEO that, a slide about ChatGPT citations, and a microsite that looks busy and does not book a single job in Flemington.

For Somerset and Hunterdon trades, the question is blunt. Does the website produce work when Google or an AI answer eats the click?

Brochure GEO is easy to spot

You know the pattern. A thin "AI Search Optimization" page. Stock icons. Claims about being ready for the next wave. No call tracking plan. No service-area pages that answer real questions. No proof tied to towns you actually cover.

That is theater. It sells fear of missing out. It does not fix the plumber whose sticky call button is buried under a cookie banner.

AEO and GEO matter as disciplines. They do not matter as a renamed PDF. Winning means your pages are clear enough to cite, local enough to trust, and instrumented enough that a zero-click call still shows up in the books.

Zero-click is already the job for local trades

A homeowner in Hillsborough asks for emergency water cleanup. AI Overviews or a chat answer may name a company and a phone number. The session never hits your analytics. The van still needs to roll.

If attribution only counts form fills and Google Ads clicks, you will cut the wrong channels. You will also undervalue the pages that feed the answer engines.

Practical setup for NJ operators:

- Unique trackable numbers on primary service and town pages. - CRM fields that capture "heard about us from Google / ChatGPT / AI answer" without forcing a fake click story. - Service content that states who you serve, what you do, and how fast you respond, in language a model can quote without inventing claims.

No fake case counts. No invented "47% zero-click lift." Just instrumentation that matches how people actually call.

What "produce work" means on the site

Producing work is boring and specific. Fast mobile load. Clear service menus. Town and trade pages that match search intent. Schema that matches the page. Reviews and NAP that agree with Google Business Profile. A phone path that works with wet gloves at 11 p.m.

That is the opposite of a competitor brochure labeled AI Search. It is also why cheap GEO SKUs miss the point. Floor for serious WebMaster work sits at $2500. Below that you usually get slogans and a landing page that cannot carry attribution.

NMR as a restoration client pattern is simple: emergency search, short attention, call first. The site either supports that or it is decoration.

Before you buy the package

Before you buy another AI Search package, ask for the zero-click plan. How do you know a cited answer became a booked job in Raritan or Clinton? If they cannot answer without a new buzzword, keep the budget on the site that answers the phone.

GEO theater fills decks. Attribution and a working site fill the schedule.
