SEO Daily Brief No. 2
On "Google Is Becoming A Personalizing Mirror Before You Even Type A Query"
Google's move toward serving personalized predictions before you search is a fundamental shift from discovery to inference, and it's devastating for brands who rely on unprompted visibility. When the search engine predicts what you want before you ask for it—pulling from your history, location, purchase patterns, whatever else they're tracking—you've moved from competing for attention in a query space to competing for inclusion in a pre-baked recommendation set that you can't see or influence through traditional SEO. The playbook stops working: you can't optimize your way into something Google decides you probably want based on surveillance, not search intent. Brands need to stop treating this as a tweak to rankings and start thinking about how to get first-party data signals strong enough that Google *wants* to predict you, which is an entirely different game than the one that got them here.
